We are talking about the long-tailed bat. This animal is small in size and weighs no more than 8 grams. At the same time, the bat reaches 51 mm in length. This species was previously known to science, but it is very poorly studied and has never been found on Kunashir. Scientists from the Institute of Ecological and Agricultural Biology of Tyumen State University were lucky to make a discovery with the support of specialists from the Laboratory of Evolutionary Zoology and Genetics at the Federal Scientific Center for Biodiversity of Terrestrial Biota of East Asia FEB RAS. The expedition members collected biological materials, including the DNA of a rare animal, which are planned to be further studied in laboratory conditions.
As you know, the long-tailed bat is common in Manchuria, Japan, and southern Siberia. On the island of Kunashir, it was revealed for the first time. It is noteworthy that this bat hibernates in caves and hunts in the air, mainly for small insects. The biology of this species is practically not studied. There are no bats in Russia that would attack people, writes Nation-News.
