Russian provocations with the borders of the Baltic states: the USA and the European Union demand explanations

Washington demands that Russia explain the initiative to “change the borders” with Lithuania and Finland in the Baltic Sea. The EU is also outraged by the Kremlin's actions on the Narva River, through which the Estonian-Russian border passes.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed concern that the Kremlin is sowing confusion on the borders of the Baltic countries and the Baltic Sea. He emphasized that Moscow should explain its actions.

Provocations by the Kremlin – in the field of view

The head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, also expressed dissatisfaction with Russia's unilateral actions on the Estonian-Russian border. He emphasized the need to return the buoys that demarcate the border on the Narva River.

This border incident is part of a wider pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia, including on its maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region. Such actions are unacceptable. The European Union expects an explanation from Russia regarding the removal of the buoys and their immediate return, – stated Borrell.

According to the Estonian Border Service, Russian border guards removed more than 20 buoys without warning. These navigation marks play a key role in preventing vessels from inadvertently entering Russian internal waters, which could lead to international incidents.

Overall the situation in the Baltic region remains tense and Russia's actions causing concern among neighboring countries and the international community. The United States and the European Union continue to closely monitor developments, supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states of the Baltic region.
