Russia has withdrawn its troops from the Black Sea Zmeiny Island, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The statement of the department notes that the withdrawal was carried out as a gesture of goodwill.

“Thus, it has been demonstrated to the world community that the Russian Federation does not interfere with the efforts of the UN to organize a humanitarian corridor for the export of agricultural products from the territory of Ukraine,” noted in the department.

Snake Island has been under the control of Russian troops since February 24 – the first day of the war.

In May, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of the Ukrainian landing force that tried to land on the island.

The Ukrainian side, in turn, reported the defeat of several Russian ships near the island. On June 17, the Ukrainian Navy announced that it had destroyed the Russian tug Vasily Bekh. According to the Ukrainian side, the ship delivered ammunition, weapons and military personnel to Zmeiny Island.

Control over the island in the northwestern part of the Black Sea is important for the struggle for control over the coast in the Odessa region and approaches to the port of Odessa .
