In Japan, February 7th is the annual Day of the Northern Territories. On this occasion, the government held a national congress in Tokyo and adopted an appeal demanding the return of the Kuril Islands to Japan. This is reported by the Japanese edition

Northern territories in Japan are called the southern Kuril Islands now occupied by Russia – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.

“The fact that the Soviet Union illegally occupied the islands 77 years ago and that this occupation continues to this day cannot be tolerated”, — stated in the adopted conference statement.

It also contains an appeal demanding that the islands be returned to Japan. For the first time since 2018, the phrase “illegal occupation” was used in the document.

The publication notes that the form of the government's statement is an increase in opposition to Russia, which continues its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was present at the congress, said that the resumption of exchange projects on the four islands, like “visiting the northern graves” (allows former residents of the northern territories to visit the graves without visas), is one of the main priorities in the future relations between Japan and Russia.

He said that he would adhere to the course of resolving the territorial issue and concluding a peace treaty.

Tokyo also hosted a rally near the Russian embassy. Its participants shouted in Japanese and Russian: ""Get out of the northern territories! Give back our islands!"

The participants of the action, on cars, installed Ukrainian flags.

"Get out of Ukraine", — chanted into the loudspeakers.

BAGNET recalls that after the defeat of Japan in World War II, the USSR annexed the — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.

In 1956, the USSR and Japan signed a peace declaration, according to which, after the conclusion of the peace treaty, Shikotan and Habomai were to be transferred to Japan. But the Japanese authorities in subsequent years insisted only on the return of all the islands. The peace treaty has not yet been signed.

October 7, 2022 The Verkhovna Rada declared Japan's support with regard to its northern territories and recognized that they were occupied by Russia. 287 deputies voted for the adoption of the relevant resolution.

Later on the same day, Zelensky signed decree No. 692/2022, confirming respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Japan, including its northern territories, which continue to be under the occupation of the Russian Federation.
