Four months after taking office as president of the Republic Senate, Senator Roy Barreras revealed that as soon as the leadership of the first year of the legislature, will resign. His decision has to do with the progress of the cancer that he was diagnosed with a few weeks ago and with carrying out several of the national government's initiatives in Congress.

“I have a health condition that I hope will allow me to finish my responsibility in the presidency of the Senate. God willing and I'm doing well, I hope to finish my political work not in four years, but in one year”, revealed Barreras in dialogue with Semana magazine.

In addition, he assured that after resigning from the Colombian legislature, he would retire from political life. Barreras is one of the most experienced congressmen and politicians in Colombia: he has racked on several of the country's political fronts such as Uribismo, Santos and now he has landed on Petrism. In fact, he is currently the main ally of President Gustavo Petro in the National Capitol.

“Once the presidency of Congress is over, depending on health conditions, I will wait until I retire from political activity”, Barreras told the aforementioned outlet. In addition, he said that when he can give up his political life, what he called a “generational replacement” will come, which will take care of the Colombian political model.

The doctor, also a native of Cali, revealed that he has completed his cycle in the different public corporations of the country. However, despite the fact that he will be leaving parliament, he assured that he will continue to work hand in hand with President Petro to carry out the government plan devised by the head of state.

Likewise, Barreras revealed that one of the reasons that led him to resign from Congress is because he wants to move from politics to letters and thus dedicate himself to law“Literary vocation” which, in his opinion, is a hidden ability. Likewise, he gave other details of the plans that he will carry out as soon as he resigns from the legislature.

“I have plans to enjoy my family more, to write, but I will not leave the responsibility with President Petro de move forward with this agenda. As long as my health allows me, I will be in charge of this presidency,” the president of Congress told Semana.

With this information, it would be ruled out that, if the political reform promoted by the Petro government is approved, Roy Barreras would land in the Executive. Before the Colombian president formed his ministerial cabinet, different sectors assured that the current senator of the Historical Pact sounded like Minister of the Interior or of other of the most important portfolios of the Government of Colombia.

However, as Barreras reiterated to the publication, as soon as the presidency of the Senate ends in July 2023, he will move away from the political work that he has been developing for more than 20 years. “What has been possible has been done”, added the congressman.

In the photograph he posted on Twitter, Senator Barreras appears wearing a Mexican wrestling mask and accompanied by two young men and a nurse, with a message that reads: “We made it to session 23 of 30! We are making progress! Fighters for life!”.

On the treatment he is receiving, days after his diagnosis was made public, Senator Barreras had detailed that health professionals the Santa Fe Foundation “they are going to decide the conduct to treat this finding that has appeared in my check-up, which is a small colon cancer in the lower digestive tract, that can be treated, that it is cured if one is judicious and here they will tell me what to do”.
