no fan service for The Rings of Power
The first season of The Rings of Power did not receive a very warm reception from J. R. R. Tolkien fans. The writers themselves admitted that “things didn't work out well” following the flood of criticism they received. Despite promising that the rest of the series would be significantly better, recent statements from showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne imply that they aren't going to change their plans to please audiences. Fan service, very little for them! During an interview given to our colleagues from GQ, the two men admitted to having become aware of the heated debates of Internet users on social networks after the release of the first season. However, they explain that they already have a history of planned, independently of the comments, and over several seasons.
Much of the second season was written before the release of the first, so we have a plan and we stick to it. We read everything. It's impossible not to want to listen and not want to engage with people. And if people like the show, that's sometimes really nice. But at the end of the day, we make the show we believe in.
And if they don't like the show, then, you know, sometimes people are… It's interesting to see what people have to say. We've been working on this for a long time. We have a plan and Tolkien had a plan. We're eager to see it through to the end.
On the one hand, these statements from the showrunners are reassuring: that they have a well-established plan regarding theRings of Power is a rather good sign. That the series is subject to the slightest criticism from fans would make its content too volatile. On the other hand, regardless of the anger of the fans at the various modifications made to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, other much more serious problems remain. Namely the quality of the series itself, which suffers from lengths, numerous narrative inconsistencies, and banal characters.
And you, what do you think of these statements?
