Ottawa's Rideau Canal closed its doors to skating Wednesday evening, just four days after the first section of the rink opened for the season.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) indicated on its website that the closure was temporary and would last until further notice.

The canal closed to preserve the ice and prevent damage that could be caused to the ice by rain and above-freezing temperatures expected in the coming days.

Many Ottawa residents welcomed the partial reopening of the rink on Sunday, after it remained closed last winter for the first time in its history.

What if we refrigerated the Rideau Canal?

However, skaters noted earlier this week the poor quality of the ice, and the NCC warned on its website that the snow could hide cracks, irregularities , rough edges or holes.

The NCC posted an animated GIF of Margot Robbie crying in the Barbie movie to express disappointment over the closure on social media, adding that it planned to reopen the canal as soon as weather and security would allow it.
