Review of the first series of the series “House of the Dragon”

HBO hosted the main premiere of the channel – the first episode of the series “House of the Dragon”, which is a prequel to “Game of Thrones”. Events unfold approximately 170 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and show the beginning and the height of the civil strife of House Targaryen. ProShoKino did a quick recap of the first episode of “House of the Dragon”.

Story and Dramaturgy

Before us appeared the era of the rule of the Targaryens on the Iron Throne. Its heyday and the beginning of its decline. After all, everything is not so simple inside the family, intrigues begin to weave, envy and a thirst for power embrace family members, unforgivable acts. This will eventually turn into a full-scale civil war, in which thousands of civilians will die, and the glory of madmen will be fixed for House Targaryen.

As in “Game of Thrones”, there is drama, insidious intrigue, political strife. But here's the trouble – the true fire of the dragons is not noticeable there, perhaps because the first series is completely devoted to a short “retelling” “who is who's uncle and brother”. So to say, the audience only gets to know all the characters. Although there is already the first death, we will not spoil who exactly.

“Dragon House” from HBO

The expressiveness of the dialogues of the characters still leaves much to be desired – they have not reached it yet. It seems that there are no sharp memorable phrases that will become catchy, as in “Game of Thrones”, while there are no vivid quotes. While we wait. As for blood and nudity, there are far fewer of them here than in “Game of Thrones”. But again, that's for now.

Acting

Really strong acting and complex three-dimensional characters impress from the first minutes. And although there is no truly charismatic hero like Tyrion Lannister, comparing the heroes of “Game of Thrones” and “Dragon Houses” do not want and do not need. I would like to note the emphasis on women in the medieval House Targaryen, especially because of the naturalistic birth scenes: disgusting and wild.

Dragon's House

Despite some shortcomings, the acting is lively and impartial, all the characters are harmoniously combined and do not draw more attention to themselves than they need to. Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, brother of King Viserys, is like stepping out of the pages of George R. R. Martin's book. Young actress Millie Alcock appeared on the screen in the role of young Rainier, who are very in harmony with Smith.

The second episode will be released on August 28 on HBO Max.
