Restoring historical justice: the National Bank initiates the change of the name

Restoration of historical justice/National Bank

In order to restore historical justice, promote de-Russification and the revival of national traditions in the monetary circulation of Ukraine, the National Bank of Ukraine initiates the change of the name of exchange coins from “kopeck” to “step”.< /strong>

According to the conviction of the National Bank, the revival of the name “step” will return Ukrainian coins to their own identity. This is stated on the website.

The National Bank says that today the Ukrainian people are taking back everything that was unfairly stolen from them and mutilated by Kremlin narratives. It is time to restore justice for the monetary system as well, to cleanse monetary sovereignty of the slightest kinship with anything Moscow.

Having studied the history of monetary circulation in Ukraine, we came to the undeniable conclusion that such a name for a changeable coin as “kopey” is actually a symbol of the Moscow occupation… We have our own, specifically Ukrainian, word for defining small coins – it is the word “step”, – he emphasized Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine Andrii Pishnyi.

The revival of the name “step” will return Ukrainian coins to their own identity. The ratio between the “penny” and the “step” will be 1 to 1, and the National Bank will develop the corresponding design, as well as the procedure and terms for withdrawing “pennies” from circulation.

After coordination with state bodies, the developed draft laws will be sent for review and approval by the Verkhovna Rada.

Origin of the word “step”:

The name “step” is of ancient Ukrainian origin, it was already used both on the territory of Ukraine and and in Ukrainian monetary figures (from the 16th to the 17th centuries). This is a unique name for a coin that other linguistic cultures do not know. It is widely used in classical Ukrainian literature, in particular, it is often mentioned in the works of Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, and other writers.

During the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921, banknotes with the name “step” were introduced into real monetary circulation. , which was fixed at the legislative level. Therefore, the revival of this practice is justified by the historical and linguistic tradition of Ukraine.
