Republicans win majority in House of Representatives

Decision Desk HQ projects that the Republican Party will gain control of both houses of Congress when President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, allowing the new leader to push through his agenda of cutting taxes and shrinking the federal government.

As Edison Research previously predicted, Republicans have already secured a majority in the Senate with at least 52 seats to 46, and according to DDHQ, they will be able to hold on to at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, although as of Monday evening, the outcome of eight races remains undecided, Reuters reports.

During his first term, from 2017 to 2021, Trump passed massive tax cuts that expire next year. That legislation, as well as Democratic President Joe Biden’s signature $1 trillion infrastructure bill, were passed when Republicans and Democrats consistently controlled both houses of Congress.

By comparison, in the last two years, when power was divided, Biden had little success in advancing his legislative initiatives, and Congress struggled to fulfill its primary function of providing funding to keep the government running.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives has proven unstable: the first speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted by some Republicans, and his successor, Mike Johnson, has also faced continued resistance. But Trump’s influence on the party, and particularly on hard-line Republicans, remains, as demonstrated by his success earlier this year in blocking a border security bill with Mexico.

Trump’s power is also bolstered by a Supreme Court with a conservative majority (6-3), which includes three justices appointed by Donald Trump himself during his first term.

A Republican victory would likely impact the current session of Congress. At the end of the year, Congress must approve funding for the government to avoid a Christmas shutdown and extend borrowing authority to prevent a historic default.

One possible scenario is that the House will have to reopen the country to prevent a government shutdown over the holidays and extend borrowing authority to prevent a historic default.
