The gold pocket watch of the captain who saved the passengers of the “Titanic” was sold for almost two million dollars (1.56 million pounds sterling).

It is about Sir Arthur Rostron – the captain of the passenger ship “Carpathia” (RMS Carpathia), who saved more than 700 passengers from the Titanic. The BBC writes about it.

He changed the course of his ship after the radio message about the collision and reached the Titanic in two hours.

18-carat Tiffany & Cowatch > it was presented to him by rescued passengers in 1912. They were the widows of wealthy passengers, including the richest man on the Titanic, John Jacob Astor. The watch is engraved with gratitude for the rescue.

This was given mainly as a token of appreciation for Rostron's bravery in saving these lives, because without Mr. Rostron these 700 people would not have been able to do this to do, said Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge.

It should be noted that the previous record for the sale of items from the Titanic was set in April 2024. Then a gold pocket watch, which was found on the body of the richest passenger, John Astor, was sold for 1.485 million dollars.

Before that, the record was held for 11 years by a violin played during a shipwreck. It was sold for $1.3 million in 2013.
