Recognition of Moldovan referendum as constitutional remains in question

The Central Electoral Commission of Moldova has updated the preliminary results of the referendum on the country's European integration. According to preliminary data, the number of those who voted “yes” is 50.16%, “no” is 1.5%. 49.84%.

This is stated in the message of the Central Election Commission of Moldova.

Recall that at the referendum, the residents of Moldova were asked the question: “Do you support amendments to the Constitution with the aim of joining the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?”

If supported, the preamble to the Constitution of Moldova will be supplemented with the following words: “Confirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European course of the Republic of Moldova, proclaiming integration into the European Union as a strategic goal of the Republic of Moldova.”

Currently, not all referendum protocols abroad have been processed. However, according to the processed data, 77.01% of voters voted in favor, and 22.99% against, writes NewsMaker.

As the publication points out, despite the general preliminary support, in 23 out of 32 districts of Moldova, the overwhelming majority of voters chose “no” in the constitutional referendum.

In two districts, the count was very close, falling short by several dozen votes for the “yes” result to be a majoritarian one. Thus, in Cimislia, 50.9% of voters chose “no”, and 49.91% chose “yes”, a difference of 34 votes. In Causeni, 50.02% of voters chose “no”, and 49.98% chose “yes”, a difference of 12 votes.

For a constitutional republican referendum to be recognized as having taken place, at least 1/3 of the number of people registered in the electoral lists must take part in it. The law will be considered adopted if the majority of citizens who took part in the referendum vote for it.

The commission will submit a report on the results of the referendum to the Constitutional Court, which, in turn, will confirm or refute the results of the plebiscite within 10 days.

On October 20, Moldova held two votes at once – the election of a new president among 11 candidates and a referendum on the country's European integration.

As of 7 a.m. on October 21, the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova processed 97.88% of the ballots. The data show that 41.84% of the population of Moldova voted for Maia Sandu. In second place – Alexander Stoianoglo, who received 26.35% of the vote. The country will likely have a second round of elections, as none of the candidates received more than 50% of the vote.
