Rebecca Marino qualifies for Australian Open

Canada’s Rebecca Marino has qualified for the main draw at the Australian Open, which begins on February 8, in Melbourne.

For the occasion, Marino, 312e in the world, defeated the Belgian Maryna Zanevska, 252e, in two sets of 6-4 and 7-6 (9) in the final round of qualifying for the first major of the season, which took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The meeting lasted 1 h 49 min.

Thus, the 30-year-old, who has already been ranked at 38e rank in the WTA rankings nearly a decade ago, regained the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2013.

During the match, Marino slammed 16 aces and committed seven double faults.

The story is good for the British Columbian, who has been trying for a few years to return to the WTA circuit. Indeed, she was a tennis retiree from 2013 to 2017, due to serious mental health issues.
