My husband and I decided right after we got married that we would do everything fifty-fifty.
Work, housework, relaxing and enjoying life. At least, I told Mark, we'll try to stick to this schedule until we have kids. Wanda, my mother-in-law, would just purse her lips in displeasure when she saw her son washing dishes or cooking dinner.
-In our times, men were treated better – sighed the pensioner – They were looked after and cared for. And they weren't forced to wash dishes.
-You have to get used to the idea that a man is not a household invalid – I told my mother-in-law. She pursed her lips again, and her eyes said, “Wait until he leaves you.” Marek was happy with our relationship. He even surprisingly said a few times that he even liked cooking.
-My mother wouldn't let me near the stove on pain of death. I never knew cooking could be so interesting.
As you might imagine, my husband and I are used to spending our free time together. We love going out, but we also enjoy staying at home. This year, in winter, we decided that we would definitely go to the seaside. We will lie like seals on the warm shore, admire red sunsets and blue sunrises.
We planned a vacation for August, when the main influx of tourists will disappear from the beaches. But in May, Marek “made me happy” with some news. He is categorically not allowed to take a vacation in the summer. They are offering him November or December, when the sea with swimming and sunbathing is out of the question.
We racked our brains for a week, trying to find a way out of this situation. I gave up and told my husband I would have to return the tickets and cancel the hotel reservation. He looked at me with a puzzled look and said it was the most ridiculous decision I could have made.
At my husband's urging, I decided to take a vacation regardless. I thought that the people around me would understand our decision, but they didn't. Everyone, absolutely all the women we knew, started dragging me through the mud. My mother openly said that I was selfish and put myself above others. My friends almost boycotted me. They said that I was a disgrace to the female sex.
My best friend joined the camp of women who condemned me. I reminded her that my husband was not even three years old and that he was quite capable of cooking on his own. My friends twisted their temples and mentally buried my Mark under a pile of pots in the cold kitchen. My mother-in-law, however, had the most work, as she found out right before we left that I was going on vacation alone.
-I knew it! You deliberately chose a time when my son would be busy with work! Now he'll be starving at home, and you'll be wagging your tail in front of other vacationers! – my mother-in-law started getting worked up. I explained that it was her son's idea, but she wouldn't listen to me.
I told Mark to get his mother in order, because I can't vouch for myself! Fortunately, my husband understood me well. My mother-in-law, of course, got mad at us. How could I, so-and-so, get her son to yell at his mother? Let her sit by herself, she'll calm down soon.
