My life with my husband is not boring at all. Every day is a surprise.
But most often these surprises are such that you want to sit down, cover your face with your hands and ask yourself: “How did this happen? Why do I need all this?” But recently Irek has outdone himself. In the fall, our daughter started first grade. This year the frost came in November.
I noticed that my daughter's winter jacket was too small for her. I'm not saying it's completely critical, but you can see that the sleeves are too short, and the zipper on the belly barely closes. That would be fine, but they're little kids, they often play in the snow. “We have to buy Zosia a new jacket,” I told my husband that evening, when my daughter was already asleep. “We'll go shopping this weekend.”
Irek grunted something like “uh-huh,” although he seemed more interested in the TV than me at that moment. I decided to remind him about it later. A few days later, my husband came home in a great mood.
-What happened? – I asked.
-I got a bonus! – he said proudly. – A big one!
-I think it's great. Now we'll buy a jacket and winter boots for Zośka. And maybe I'll buy something too. I was excited and already thinking about what I'd get. However, my joy didn't last long. The next day, on my day off from work, Irek suddenly disappeared early in the morning. I asked him on the phone where he was, but he grumbled that he was in the city and hung up. In the evening he came back with two huge bags and some long stick.
-What kind of circus is this? – I asked, while Irek rummaged through the bags in the hallway.
-This isn't a circus, this is winter fishing – he smiled. – I'll show you everything, come quickly! It turned out that my husband had spent his bonus on equipment. A fridge, a thermos, thermal underwear, a few boxes, fishing rods and a million other bits and bobs that I can’t even remember the names of. He spread them all out on the floor with a kind of reverence.
– Is that all you bought?? – I finally asked.
– Yes, that’s all – my husband smiled rather contentedly.
– Except for the tent, but that’s for later.
Then it hit me. – Wait! You spent all the money?
-Yeah right – Irek replied calmly, like it was nothing. – What? It's my bonus, I can afford it sometimes.
At that moment I realized the evening probably wouldn't go smoothly. – And the jacket for your daughter? Have you thought about it? Or maybe she'll wear the old one until spring? – My husband looked at me, frowned, and clearly didn't immediately remember what I'd told him a few days ago.
– Well, we'll buy it somehow – he mumbled. – Why are you so worried?
– It's freezing here, and you tell me “somehow”?! What are we going to eat next?”
Then, to be honest, a scandal broke out. Irek tried to justify himself by showing a fancy thermos, colorful floats, and a box with some bugs. I simply left the room so as not to break down even more. In the end, of course, we bought my daughter a jacket, but we had to reduce our Christmas budget and spend less money on food.
I didn't get any presents, my husband only got socks, and we only bought my daughter a cheap doll. And my husband hasn't gone fishing yet. Now I'll probably get nervous every time I hear the word “bonus”. Because our dad can spend it on anything, but not on really necessary things things.
