Young people laugh at us: they say that grandmas always save for their funerals.
But life is so expensive now that you have to save every penny. There are, of course, families in which children have the opportunity to help the elderly. But that's not my case.
My friend always wonders why her kids won't buy me a new fridge? This one's been used for 40 years! My daughter bought her a fridge and even a microwave. Even though she didn't really need it. I have a son, not a daughter. He'll never offer it himself, so what can I do – beg?
My daughter-in-law doesn't just want to give me something, she wants to take it away from me! Last time she came over, she liked the terry towels – I had some new ones. She said, “Oh, I'll take them, because they're not available in this quality anymore!” Klara just shook her head in understanding. “What else can I say? But just a month before the new year, my friend came to me with a message: “Darling, don't refuse right away! I have an offer. I know a girl, my friend's granddaughter, who is urgently looking for a room. She's a student, her name is Lidia. She and the girls were renting an apartment, and the landlord asked them to move out for some reason…
I agreed to meet Lidia. The next day, they both came to visit. In the few weeks we lived together, I had become so used to her that I was even nervous when I learned that Lidia was going away for the holidays. She was going to spend the holidays visiting her family, and my son and his family were going to visit me on Christmas Eve.
Lidia's money, which she had paid in a month in advance, came in handy – I bought some treats for the Christmas Eve table. On the evening of December 24, my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson arrived. “I brought some cucumbers. And some cabbage,” my daughter-in-law said, carrying the bags to the kitchen. “Okay, Irka,” I replied, but I thought: “What kind of pickles, better buy some sausage!”
– Mom, whose stuff is this? – asked my son, finally noticing the change in the situation in the other room. These are the tenant's stuff, she went home for the holidays.
– What? Why? You didn't even consult us! How can you let a stranger into your house? And what if they ransack the apartment and steal everything? – my son was outraged.
– And what's there to take, Witek? Just look around. And the money that Lidia pays me comes in handy.
– Mom, that's not how it's done. If you need money, ask me. I'll think about it and we'll decide – either I'll give you money or we'll buy something, if necessary – the son was angry.
– Son, I'm not going to ask for anything. I'm not used to begging, I'll manage somehow – I replied to end this unpleasant conversation and went to the kitchen.
