At first I thought I was imagining it.
Family gatherings have always been a moment of respite for me. Laughter, conversations, warmth – all of this made me feel part of something bigger. But for some time now, every such meeting has become a nightmare for me. The reason was Michał – the husband of my sister, Agata.
At first I thought I was imagining it. His glances that lingered a little too long. Compliments that seemed too personal. “You have a great dress, Ewa. It highlights your “hellip” assets,” he said once, and I felt the blood drain from my face. I looked at him, searching his eyes for some sign that he was joking, but I saw something else there, something that scared me.
Over time, Michael began to act more and more bold. At one family dinner, when everyone was busy talking, he leaned over to me and whispered, “I've always liked you more than Agata.” The words were like a blow. I felt dirty, betrayed, but most of all angry. How he spoke? How he spoke like that about my sister?
After that event, I decided to tell Agata. She was my sister, and I didn't want her to be stuck in a relationship with someone like that. I chose a quiet moment when we were alone. „We need to talk– I began, feeling my heart beating faster and faster.
„What's going on?– she asked with a smile, pouring us tea.
„It's about Michał– I said, trying to stay calm. „He… he behaves towards me in a way that worries me.”
Agata looked at me, confused. “What do you mean?”
“He flirts with me– I said it directly. “He does it at every meeting. He compliments me, looks at me in a way that&hello Agata, he even said that he always liked me better.”
Her face hardened instantly. „Ewa, what are you saying? This is absurd. Michał is not that kind of person.”
„Agata, I experience this every time we meet,– I tried to explain, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. „I didn't want to tell you this, but you have to know.”
„This is some kind of misunderstanding,– she replied coldly, putting down her cup. “Michał likes you, but that's all. You're trying to tell me that your husband is hitting on you? That's ridiculous.”
I felt the ground slipping from under my feet. “Agata, please, trust me” I begged. “I wouldn't lie about something like that.”
“Maybe you're the one misinterpreting the situation?– she asked, her voice full of a coldness I'd never heard before. „Maybe you're imagining things?”
After that conversation, our relationship changed forever. Agata started avoiding me, and I felt like an outcast in our family. At subsequent meetings, Michael acted as if nothing had happened, but his gaze was even more defiant, as if he wanted to show that he had won.
I don't know what hurt more – the fact that Michael treated me like that, or the fact that my own sister didn't believe me. I wonder if she'll ever understand that I was telling the truth. I'm afraid that if she doesn't, she'll one day discover his true face in a way that will hurt her even more.
