It started innocently.
I have always been close to my son, Piotr. He was my only child, and after his father died, our bond grew even stronger. Piotr always said that I was the most important thing to him and that he would never let anything tear us apart. When he married Marta, I was happy for him, although over time I noticed that our meetings were becoming less frequent. However, I did not expect that one day I would hear something that would break my heart.
It started innocently. Piotr explained his rare visits with his duties at work, the renovation of the apartment, and then the care of their newborn son. I understood that and did not complain – I was happy when I saw that he was trying to be a good husband and father.
But every time I asked when I’d see him, I heard excuses.
One day I decided to talk to him openly. I called him and invited him over for dinner.
– „Piotr, can you come over?? I haven’t seen you in a while.”
There was a moment of silence, and then his voice sounded strangely uncertain.
„Mom, we need to talk. But maybe it's better over the phone.”
– „Something happened?”
– „Marta thinks I've been spending too much time at your place lately. She says I've been neglecting our family life.”
For a moment I didn't know what to say. How could she think he was spending too much time at my place when he barely visited? I gathered my courage and asked:
– „Piotr, do you think that or is that just her opinion?”
He sighed heavily.
– „Mom, it's complicated. Marta feels that when I'm with you, I spend less time with her and the baby. She says it makes her feel like she's less important.”
These words were like a punch to the heart. Did Marta see me as a rival?? I didn't understand how she could think that. I always tried to support her, help with the baby, and even avoid any arguments. Instead, I felt rejected.
I decided to talk to Marta in person. I called her and asked her to meet. She agreed, although I could sense a coldness in her voice.
We met at a café. Marta arrived on time, but from the very beginning of the conversation she made it clear that she didn’t want to listen to my arguments.
– „Mrs. Marta, please tell me what’s going on. Have I done something to make you feel threatened by me?– I asked, trying to stay calm.
– „Threatened? Please don’t be so dramatic. I just think Piotr has been spending too much time with you. He has his own family now and he should focus on them.”
– „Marta, but I'm not taking Piotr away from you. He's my son, and I just want to have contact with him. Is it really that much?”
– „Please understand me. For me, family is me and our child now. And you keep dragging him into your affairs, as if he were responsible for everything that happens in your life.”
I was speechless. Did she really think I wanted to burden Piotr with my problems?
I was independent, I never asked for more than was necessary. I felt that the conversation was not leading to anything good, so I decided to end the meeting.
– „Marta, I don't want to argue. I always thought we were a family, and I wanted us to be able to support each other. But if that's what you think, I won't press you.”
Marta looked at me with a mixture of relief and cool triumph.
– „It's good that you understand that.”
After that conversation, Piotr visited me even less often. He always seemed torn between loyalty to his mother and trying to maintain peace in his marriage. I felt that our relationship would never be the same.
Today I only see Piotr and my grandson at larger family celebrations. I try to enjoy every moment, but it's hard for me to hide the pain. I love my son and I will always wait for him, but I know that Marta will never let us go back to what we had. This story taught me that sometimes love means acceptance, even if it hurts.
