A few days earlier I met with Tomek, my colleague from work.
I was sitting on the couch, looking at the note my mother-in-law had left. On it were the cold, heartless words: „I want you to do a DNA test. We have to be sure.” I felt my face burn with anger and shame. My marriage, my family – all of it hanging by a thread because of one innocent situation that was misunderstood.
A few days earlier I had met Tomek, my colleague from work, in a small restaurant.
We wanted to discuss a project we were working on together. It was a regular, formal dinner. Talk of spreadsheets, budgets, presentations—nothing more. But my mother-in-law, who happened to be passing by, saw us through the window. Apparently, what she saw was enough for her to cast a shadow of suspicion on me.
When I got home that evening, the atmosphere was tense. My husband, Piotr, sat in silence while his mother, Teresa, looked at me with a mixture of anger and triumph.
– „Who was that? The man you had lunch with?– she asked before I could say hello.
„This is my colleague from work. We had a meeting about a project– I replied calmly, but I could see that she wasn't convinced.
– „Projekt? You know that things like that are done in the office, not in a restaurant. Maybe we should make sure that this little daughter of yours is really ours.”
I froze. I couldn't believe she had actually said that. My little daughter, our little Ania, was my whole world. And now, because of one chance meeting, her origins were being questioned.? I looked at Piotr, expecting him to come to my defense. But he was silent. His face was tense, his gaze fixed on the floor.
– “Piotr, say something,” I whispered.
After a long moment, he looked up.
– “Maybe we should do this test for peace of mind,” he said quietly.
These words were like a knife to my heart. The betrayal I felt in that moment was worse than anything else. Not because Peter doubted my faithfulness, but because he didn't stand up for me. In that moment, I felt a wall growing between us.
For the next few days, my mother-in-law wouldn't leave us alone. Every time she visited our house, she would steal glances at Ania, as if she was looking for evidence that she wasn't Piotr's granddaughter. Finally, under pressure from everyone, I agreed to the test.
When the results came back, I felt no relief, only deep sadness. The results clearly indicated that Piotr was Ania's father, but the price for this “certainty” was high. Our marriage was damaged, and trust shattered.
When my mother-in-law saw the results, she didn't apologize. She just said:
– „Well, it's good that everything's cleared up. Now we can sleep peacefully.”
But I couldn't. That night, when Piotr tried to hug me, I pulled away.
– „It's not about the test, Piotr. It's about you letting your mother undermine everything we built together. Do you even love me? Do you believe in me?”
Piotr didn't answer. And I, looking at him, understood that our relationship would never be the same. Sometimes it's not betrayal that destroys relationships, but lack of trust and support. And that's exactly what was missing in our marriage.
