Ratched: Should You Watch Netflix Series With Sarah Paulson? Sarah Paulson is back! After American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy called on his favorite actress for his new series Ratched, available this Friday, September 18, 2020 on Netflix. She plays the cruel nurse Mildred Ratched, from the novel Flight over a cuckoo's nest. Should we watch the series? Here is our opinion (without spoilers).

The essential

Created by: Evan Romansky, Ryan Murphy
With: Sarah Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Finn Wittrock, Jon Jon Briones
Format: 8 episodes of approximately 1 hour.
Streaming: All episodes are available on Netflix.

The pitch

Ratched is a prequel to the movie Flight Over a Cuckoo's Nest focused on the cruel and creepy nurse Mildred Ratched. The story takes place in 1947, in a recognized psychiatric hospital in North Carolina, but renowned for its novel and disturbing brain experiments. In 8 episodes, the series will attempt to answer a question: how did nurse Ratched become over the years a monster? We will discover it over the course of the episodes, experience after experience, murder after murder.

An uneasy atmosphere and characters

Throughout the series, Ryan Murphy manages to make us uncomfortable in any way. First by his characters: cold and cruel Mildred Ratched, Dr Richard Hanover (Jon Jon Briones), drugged and addicted to all possible experiences, the serial murderer Edmund Tolleson (Finn Wittrock) with whom we would not like to be find it alone (except Dolly, played by Alice Englert), or Charlotte Wells (Sophie Okonedo), an unpredictable patient with multiple personalities.

Then, by the atmosphere. Just the place where most of the action takes place, namely a psychiatric hospital in North Carolina, is cold and creepy. The experiences that multiply there are akin to psychological and physical torture and make us cringe. The murders ensue to such an extent that it is almost impossible to get bored. As if that were not enough, Ryan Murphy does not forget to deal with a sensitive subject: the death penalty and the barbarism of the electric chair.

Actors who excel

Sarah Paulson had already proved her talent as an actress during the different seasons of American Horror Story or in American Crime Story . Once again, she offers us a bluffing performance in the role of Mildred Ratched, at the same time cold, cruel, manipulative, cynical. Its complexity is interpreted wonderfully. We love her, hate her, fear her at the same time, without being able to determine in the end whether she is one of the bad guys or the good guys. Over the course of the episodes, we will learn his story and understand more and more his strange behavior. It was worth removing him from the final season of American Horror Story!

She is not the only one to break through the screen, far from it: we will also highlight the acting games of Cynthia Nixon (Gwendolyn Briggs), Judy Davis (Betsy Bucket), Finn Wittrock or Sophie Okonedo. A tailor-made casting!

In short: if you love all things creepy, disturbing, and uncomfortable, you're going to love watching Ratched ! Ryan Murphy all spitting!
