The superior prosecutor Rafael Vela, coordinator of the special team of the Lava Jato case, affirmed that it was “fully justified” to investigate the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, for criminal organization, money laundering and corruption of officials .

In statements to Canal N, he described it as a “necessity”that the president be investigated for these crimes and said that various reports were submitted to the Attorney General's Office for this purpose.

“When at some point we had the responsibility of the money laundering system to have related investigations, we submitted reports to the Office of the Prosecutor of the Nation, which then initially determined the decision of the Prosecutor of the Nation, Pablo Sánchez Velarde, to investigate the constitutional president for serious charges of criminal organization, money laundering and corruption of officials”, he expressed.

“We said that, having filed those reports, for us it was fully justified and it was necessary for the president to be investigated for these serious charges,”, he added.

Vela Barba also considered that the changes that the Nation's prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, in the special team The White Necks of the Port are justified because it was necessary to order what did not have a “clear sense of order”.

“The changes that the nation's prosecutor has made are fully justified in ordering things that did not have a clear sense of order. We have been co-participants in all the difficulties that have existed during the development of the activities of this team”, he stressed.

Regarding the departure of prosecutor Bersabeth Revilla, who was investigating Emma Benavides, sister of the prosecutor of the Nation, Rafael Vela indicated that he respects the decision to remove her from office for a productivity issue.

“Our work is always subject to evaluation, performance and achievement of goals related to who has the power to do so and evaluate it. I have the greatest respect for Mrs. Revilla, however I also have the greatest respect for the decisions that the Nation's prosecutor is making at this time and what I must say is that beyond the personal circumstances that this may represent, I believe that what must always subsist is that the institutions must always be linked to the possibility that these changes are due to their better productivity”, he sentenced.
