The return of Rafael Nadal (ATP: 3) to the tennis courts was highly anticipated, although it could not have been in the best way. After dropping out of the Canadian Masters 1000, the Spaniard made his appearance at the event in Cincinnati and debuted against Croatian Borna Coric (ATP: 152), in the second round, losing 2-1, with partials of 7-6 (11 -9); 4-6 and 6-3.
The 'Fiera' had started well, showing that the abdominal injury that prevented her from playing in the Wimbledon semifinals was in the past, and she knew how to take advantage of her serve. However, the activity had to be stopped due to rain, when the 22-time Grand Slam champion led 5-4 in the first set.
Given the improvement in the weather, the match resumed and Borna Coric showed greater solidity: he matched the key and determined a tie-break. In the decisive stage, 'Rafa' broke her rival's serve three times, but went through the same situation four times and ended up losing 11-9.
Due to the circumstances, Nadal's obligation was to win the second game and he did, 4-6, without making any mistakes. The fans were excited by the performance of the 'Matador', although the comeback could not materialize in the end.
In the third set, Coric became strong serving and building his advantage, until he achieved a key point: he broke the Spaniard's service and placed 4-2. 'Rafa' tried to resist, but he couldn't do much and fell 6-3, saying goodbye early to the Cincinnati Masters 1000. After this fall, the outstanding tennis player focuses on the US Open.
For his part, Borna is now getting ready to play the round of 16 of the North American tour, this time against the Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP: 19), who has just eliminated the American Marcos Giron (ATP: 54), by a double 6-3.
