A high-ranking former Kremlin guard who served a 10-year prison term on charges of bribery, died in correctional colony No. 3 in the Ryazan region of Russia after an illness, reported the head of the Public Supervisory Commission in the region Viktor Boborykin.
According to him, the death of 69 -year-old Gennady Lopyrev, who before the sentencing in 2017 was a lieutenant general of the Federal Security Service of Russia, "has no criminal record". Boborykin did not specify the cause of death.
According to the Federal Service for Execution of Punishments, Lopyrev's death was related to some illness. However, according to The Moscow Times, the general did not complain about his health and was preparing for parole.
In 2017, Gennady Lopyrev was sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of accepting bribes in the amount of more than six million rubles and illegal storage of weapons. It was reported that another billion rubles were found in his possession during the search.
He pleaded not guilty. The court kept his rank of general and did not deprive him of state awards, the Radio Liberty project “Sibir.Realii” reported.
According to the Russian edition of RBC, Lopyrev was responsible for all state facilities in the south of the country in the Federal Security Service. including the residences of the President of Russia. He was the head of the FSO in the North Caucasus Federal District for thirteen years.
