Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on increasing the staffing level of the Russian armed forces.
According to the document, the staffing level of the Russian armed forces will be 2,389,130 people, including 1,500,000 military personnel. The decree comes into force on December 1, 2024.
In the previous similar decree, signed by Putin in December 2023, the regular number of the Russian armed forces was increased by 170 thousand – to 2,209,130 (1,329,000 military personnel).

After a similar decree by Putin in December 2023, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the number of the army would be increased due to "citizens who express a desire to serve in the military under a contract", therefore "a significant increase in the conscription of citizens for compulsory military service is not planned, mobilization is not envisaged".
Before this, Putin increased the number of the army in August 2022. At that time, a decree from 2017 was in effect in Russia, according to which the army staff was 1,013,628 military personnel, this figure was relevant at the start of the war.
