The mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, announced this Friday during the launch of the summer season 2023 in Punta del Este , which enabled the La Barra bridge number 2 for light traffic with a weight maximum of 5 tons.

In mid-September the authorities of the department of Maldonado decreed the temporary closure of the La Barra bridge, one of the two main accesses to the seaside resort of Punta del Este, due to failures that put to the structure in serious risk of collapse.

The second undulating bridge of La Barra, declared As a “Well of Heritage Interest”, it was built in 1999 during the administration of then President Julio María Sanguinetti and the mayor of Camilo Tortorella, and is a replica of the first one built in 1965. These two structures cross the Maldonado stream and connect the city of Punta del Este with the exclusive beach resort of La Barra, which is highly frequented by tourists from Argentina and other countries. .
