Process of sending migrants from Italy to Albanian camps blocked

Judges in the Italian city of Bologna have appealed to the EU Court of Justice to check whether their government's decision to unblock the scheme to place some asylum seekers in Albania complies with European law.

This is reported by the AFP agency, as reported by "European Pravda".

The appeal of the Italian judges concerns changes to the legislation initiated by the government of Prime Minister Georgia Meloni regarding the so-called safe countries from which asylum seekers can be deported.

After the Rome court blocked the sending of the first group of migrants to Albania, Because they were from Egypt and Bangladesh, which the EU does not recognise as safe, the Italian government has launched its own list of safe countries.

Now the Bologna judges have asked the European Court of Justice for clarification on the “clear differences” and “conflicts of interpretation” in the Italian legal system.

They also said they did not believe that countries where there was evidence of persecution of minorities could be declared safe targets.

Albania has an agreement with Italy to accept refugees in special detention centres that Italy built to help Rome curb illegal migration. It has already attracted the attention of other Western countries seeking to contain the growing numbers of migrants arriving from Africa and the Middle East.

Human rights groups have expressed concern that Italy is “outsourcing” its international obligations, but Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has rejected the criticism.
