[Preview] Week 1: the new coaches and Andy Dalton to the test

September 12, 2021 by archyde

While the Buccaneers got out of the trap of Cowboys, now place for the rest of the NFL. Lots of matches at 7 p.m. in this first week with a climax at 10:25 p.m. which will be the movement of Browns with the reigning finalist, for a re-entry test.

To know where and what to watch, we give you a quick overview. An explosive match at Kansas City, new coaches under the microscope, a quarterback already under pressure, a team that must start the season well and the traditional division duels: here is the program for week 1.

The match not to be missed

Kick-off Sunday at 22:25
Kansas City Chiefs (0-0) – Cleveland Browns (0-0)

Who would have believed it a few years ago? The Browns enter the start of the season with the status of very credible outsider in the final title. The writing of Touchdown Actu even placed the franchise 5th in its pre-season Power Ranking. This is to say the hopes placed on Cleveland in 2021. The good news is that this team will have the opportunity to show itself in the first week. The bad thing is that this match will be against the squad which has just made two consecutive appearances at the Super Bowl (including a victory).

Ironically, these are the Chiefs who ended the hopes of Browns last year (22-17 in the conference semifinals). The defense of Cleveland had lived a complicated match. Reinforced in the offseason, this squad will again try to contain Patrick mahomes and his. If we do not necessarily expect an away victory from the entry of the men of Kevin Stefanski, at the very least, they will have to fight a big battle and stay in the race until the end. Cleveland will have time to progress between now and the playoffs, but the franchise must show that it does not start too far. After, if Baker Mayfield and others can grab a prestigious success, it should not be deprived of it.

The duel: Josh Allen vs. TJ Watt

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Buffalo Bills (0-0) – Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0)

It is one of the first big duels of the season. After his superb year last year (4,544 yards, 37 TDs and 10 INTs), Josh Allen must continue its momentum. Now the goal is simple for Bills and their attack: to do better than last year and reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1993 season. They have in any case the weapons for, in particular in attack. But on Sunday, they will fall on a bone, or rather a curtain. The iron one Steelers.

Pittsburgh in 2020 had a defense that received very few points (19.5 per game, 2nd in the league) and yards (305.8 per game, 3rd), especially in the pass (194.4 per game, 3rd). The main reason comes from « front seven » impressive (56 sacks, 1e) which was renewed this season. The pass-rush, carried by T.J. Watt, can foil Josh Allen. The outside linebacker, fresh from his new contract, will be there. Once on the pitch, whoever is in the discussion every year to be the best defender of the year is virtually unstoppable.

The state: 2013

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Indianapolis Colts (0-0) – Seattle Seahawks (0-0)

This is the year of the last victory of the Colts in their first game of the season (vs. les Raiders 21-17). 8 years thatIndianapolis no longer started with success. A series so black that it has become a priority objective in 2021. It must be said that there were some failures marking as these defeats vis-a-vis the Broncos from Manning in 2014, at Rams in 2017 or even in the face of Jaguars last year (their only win of the season). Jim Irsay therefore wants his team to win at Seattle. Unfortunately, the franchise is not approaching the start of the season in the best possible way.

Carson Wentz missed three weeks of preseason with a left foot injury, before making it to the roster COVID-19 for three days. It will therefore be necessary to see if the quarterback has returned to 100% of his capacities. The Colts also face many injuries. Opposite there will be a Russell Wilson who used to start his seasons well for a few years. In 2020 for example, Seattle had started the season with a 6-1 and the quarterback was already in the discussion for the title of MVP. He must now be able to reproduce his exploits throughout the season.

The player: Andy Dalton

Kick-off in the night from Sunday to Monday 2:20 am
Los Angeles Rams (0-0) – Chicago Bears (0-0)

It is an understatement to say thatAndy Dalton plays with the pressure at the start of the season. The quarterback feels he can be dislodged at any time to make room for a rookie. This new arrival is called Justin Fields and he was picked in the first round of the last draft. For the moment, Matt Nagy continues to trust the veteran… for now. The old one Bengal must / cannot be missed. The supporters will not hesitate to push to see Fields in the field. The problem : Dalton don’t start with an easy game.

Against him, the best defense in the league in 2020. Quite simply. Certainly the Rams have lost their defensive coordinator, but there are still some big names in this squad. With Jalen Ramsey, Aaron Donald and others, The Angels always has the means to stop anyone. Bad sign for Dalton and the Bears. The big news for Rams is she on the other side of the balloon with a Matt Stafford who will wear another jersey than that of Detroit for the first time in his career.

The (new) coaches

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Atlanta Falcons (0-0) – Philadelphia Eagles (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Washington Football Team (0-0) – Los Angeles Chargers (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Carolina Panthers (0-0) – New York Jets (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Detroit Lions (0-0) – San Francisco 49ers (0-0)

As has been said, there are seven new faces (or almost) in the head coaching positions this year. Two of them clash on this first day (actually four, see below). Arthur Smith and Nick Sirianni do not arrive in optimal situations. The first finds a fallow tusk at Atlanta, while the second will have to find a way to advance this attack and give confidence to Jalen Hurts. It’s hard to say who will make the best debut.

Then there are the two former defensive coordinators of the NFC West which have just taken off. Brandon Staley, formerly in charge of the defense of Rams, moves to Washington, with the Chargers while Robert Saleh, architect of the defensive squad of 49ers, va en Caroline to face the Panthers with the Jets. At last, Dan Camppel will have an expected and complicated start with the reception of 49ers by his Lions.

Division duels

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Houston Texans (0-0) – Jacksonville Jaguars (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 22:25
New England Patriots (0-0) – Miami Dolphins (0-0)

Once is not customary, the NFL offers us only two division duels this week. THE’AFC will be in the spotlight. At South first with two new trainers there too. On the one hand, David Culley To Houston starts a season which promises to be a hassle. The defense has not improved and the attack will have to do without Deshaun Watson. Opposite, Urban Meyer has more grounds for hope. He made his baptism of fire in NFL with his quarterback: Trevor Lawrence. The two men will be expected and could enjoy a match against the Texans to gain confidence.

Later in the evening, head to theEast. The attraction of this match to Foxborough will be named Mac Jones. The pitcher also makes his debut in NFL. Bill Belichick has decided to trust him and he must show why, at the head of a greatly renewed attack. Between Miami and New England the battle will in any case be fierce with two very similar teams in the profile. Dolphins like Patriots will rely on their defense to try to grab the playoffs. They may also be in the fight all year round for this place in the post-season. Hence the importance of this first match.

The rest

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Cincinnati Bengals (0-0) – Minnesota Vikings (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Tennessee Titans (0-0) – Arizona Cardinals (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 22:25
New York Giants (0-0) – Denver Broncos (0-0)

Kick-off Sunday at 22:25
New Orleans Saints (0-0)- Green Bay Packers (0-0)

Kick-off in the night from Monday to Tuesday at 2:15 a.m.
Las Vegas Raiders (0-0) – Baltimore Ravens (0-0)

In the rest of this week’s meetings, a lot of feedback will be particularly observed. First that of Joe Burrow. Convincing last year, before injuring his knee, the Bengal must continue to embody the future of his team. He will be able to test the new look air defense of the Vikings with his group of explosive receivers. TO New York also a player will be eagerly awaited: Saquon Barkley. The running back is supposed to help his squad move forward. Starting with this match at Broncos who display, on paper, one of the best defenses in the league.

The Titans and the Cardinals they will face each other at 7 p.m. in a match between two teams who hope to have progressed since last year to finally pass a milestone. Later, the Saints will welcome Jacksonville, the Packers for the first game of the rest of their life after Drew Brees. Finally, the Monday Night Football, will oppose the Raiders of Ravens. Imperial in the regular season for two years, Baltimore wants to start 2021 in the same way and a victory at Las Vegas would launch them perfectly.
