The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education and Science recommended canceling the production and awarding of gold and silver state-style medals in schools. on its Facebook page.

The Education Committee recommended canceling the awarding of gold and silver state-style medals in schools.

In recent years, we have had an increase in the number of medals, but at the same time educational gaps and a decrease in the level of knowledge of school graduates during covid and the great war. This anachronism still exists only in post-Soviet countries, Pipa noted.

She also added that giving up medals would help save money for the state budget. Instead, schools will be able to award the best students with their own awards instead of medals.

Add that, according to the Education Ombudsman, last year the state spent UAH 1.8 million on the purchase of 21,300 medals, and in 2022 the costs amounted to UAH 1 UAH 77 million for the purchase of 20,600 medals.

The amount allocated for the production of medals is greatly increasing, therefore, in the face of a full-scale invasion, the Committee recommends that the Ministry of Education and Science stop producing these medals. That is, the very fact of the children's award remains, it will simply be indicated in the documents, – explained the Head of the Subcommittee on Higher Education of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Yulia Hryshina.

According to her, the saved funds can be used for awards and scholarships for children or in support of the Armed Forces.

It is worth noting that previously, gold and silver medals gave advantages when entering higher educational institutions, now they are important only when entering a professional (vocational and technical) education institution.
