The Pontiff will attend an international meeting of religious leaders

Pope Francis on Sunday asked for prayers in support of his “pilgrimage of peace” to Kazakhstan for a meeting of religious leaders to be held this week.

Addressing the believers in St. Peter's Square, the pontiff announced that on Tuesday he would begin his three-day visit to Kazakhstan to attend a meeting of the heads of world and traditional religions.

“This will be an opportunity to meet with a large number of religious representatives and engage in dialogue, as (befits) brothers, driven by a common desire for peace, the peace that our world longs for,” Francis said and called on “everyone to prayerfully accompany this pilgrimage of peace.”

During his trip, Pope Francis hoped to meet with Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, who was trying to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier this summer, Patriarch Kirill refused to participate in the interfaith meeting.

The first ever meeting between the Pope and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church took place in 2016. Plans for a second meeting earlier this year were put on hold due to the diplomatic fallout from the war in Ukraine.

After announcing his pilgrimage, Francis urged them to continue praying for the Ukrainian people, so that “the Lord would give them comfort and hope.”
