Politico Finds 'Loophole' That Could Allow Trump to Pull US Out of NATO

After the victory of the newly elected US President Donald Trump, who is a skeptic of NATO and has repeatedly made statements about the likely withdrawal of the United States from the Alliance, NATO supporters remembered the law according to which this cannot be done without the approval of Congress. But Trump can find a way around this.

As the newspaper notes, now American supporters The North Atlantic Alliance finds comfort in a US law passed a year ago that prevents Washington from leaving the organization without the approval of a two-thirds vote of the Senate or an act of Congress.

In 2023, Senators Tim Kaine and Marco Rubio drafted a law that would require any presidential decision to withdraw from NATO to be approved by two-thirds of the Senate or authorized by an act of Congress.

But Trump may have a way around this restriction – and he has used this method before to circumvent Congress's restrictions on withdrawal from the treaty.
