Polish engineers made the torso of a realistic muscular and skeletal android

Engineers of the Polish startup Clone have created a prototype of the anthropomorphic robot Torso, which imitates the anatomy of the human torso, moving with the help of hydraulic muscles.

The main feature of the Torso robot is its anatomically accurate design, which includes two arms with movable elbows and hands with fingers, an anthropomorphic cervical spine, and a shoulder girdle with clavicle and scapulothoracic joints. Movements are provided by artificial hydraulic muscles working on the basis of McKibben actuators. This technology reproduces the function of muscles with the help of sealed tubes that contract when a liquid or gas is supplied.

The hydraulic muscles used in the robot are located in the chest and are controlled by a special matrix of valves, which ensures high precision of movements. Engineers are currently working on training the control system to perform coordinated manipulations with both hands so that the robot can efficiently perform complex tasks with high precision.

The main goal of the Clone project  — creation of a robot, the design of which will correspond as much as possible to the natural anatomy of a person. Before that, engineers focused on the development of a bionic arm, each element of which moves with the help of hydraulic muscle tension. This design allows the robot to achieve high power: the force of compression of the robot's fingers is sufficient to hold a set of weights with a total weight of 18 kilograms, which indicates the possibility of using the robot in difficult industrial or medical conditions.
