Poland's Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamys reported that the country signed an agreement with the US on the supply of an air space intelligence system to monitor the northern eastern borders of Poland worth 960 million dollars.
“Poland will be the second country in the world to use this system. The agreement defines our security, it is another act of cooperation between Poland and the USA”, — he said.
According to the contract, Poland will receive four aerostats, or moored balloons, to be deployed at posts along Poland's eastern and northeastern borders.
The contract also provides appropriate material and technical and program support. The system will be delivered and fully operational by 2027, Kosiniak-Kamish added.
According to the head of the Polish Armaments Agency, General Artur Kuptel, radars suspended on tethered balloons will monitor the sky to Ukraine , Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad from the airspace of Poland.
They are capable of detecting a wide range of objects, such as missiles, aircraft, drones and surface ships at a distance of more than 300 km.
