Poland lacks volunteers to form Ukrainian Legion brigade

Poland has not yet managed to recruit a sufficient number of Ukrainian citizens to form a Ukrainian Legion brigade.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said this in an interview with European Pravda.

“We have done everything for our part a long time ago. Now we are waiting for Ukrainian conscripts or volunteers,” Sikorski said.

As he noted, several thousand Ukrainians in Poland have registered in the Ukrainian database to update their place of residence, which means they have been reported as “theoretically available.” However, according to the minister, there are still not enough volunteers ready to form a brigade.

Recently, during a joint press conference with Sikorski, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said that preparatory activities are currently ongoing, they are already at the finalization stage, and after that the project on Ukrainian volunteers will move into the practical plane.

His Polish counterpart said that Warsaw and Kiev have “moved forward” on this issue.

After signing a bilateral security agreement with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv and Warsaw had agreed to form a volunteer military unit from Ukrainian citizens located in the territory of EU countries.

He said that the Ukrainian Legion will train in Poland and will be equipped by partners. Every citizen of Ukraine who decides to be in the legion will be able to sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The parties are currently working through all aspects of these agreements.

Earlier, Poland announced that it was beginning to prepare the first Ukrainian brigade.
