The head of the National Security Bureau of Poland, Jacek Severa, believes that his country should not send the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine, because this will weaken the security of Poland.
He said this on the air of Polish radio ZET.< /p>
When asked whether this system should be given to Ukraine, Severa said “definitely not.” According to him, information from the American media that the US President approved such a transfer is “concerning.”
“I have asked for a meeting with my [American] colleague so that we can discuss this issue,” — he said, adding that moving the Patriot battery is “very dangerous” and “Poland’s security is diminishing.”
Earlier, the New York Times, citing unnamed White House and military officials, wrote that US President Joe Biden approved the deployment of a second Patriot missile system in Ukraine to strengthen its air defense.
As the publication wrote, the Patriot was supposed to come from Poland, where it would protect rotational forces of American troops that would be returning to the United States.
Against the backdrop of the spring intensification of Russian attacks on the energy system, Ukraine called on international partners to provide air defense systems, in particular the Patriot system. Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Ukraine wants to quickly find 7 Patriot batteries from its partners. In particular, the country is ready to borrow them to protect its large cities.
Even earlier, President Vladimir Zelensky said that to completely close the skies over Ukraine, 25 Patriot air defense systems or its analogues are needed. How many such systems are there now in Ukraine — not disclosed.
Finally, Germany announced an initiative to provide Ukraine with additional air defense assets and called on partners and third countries to join it. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that NATO countries have committed to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems.
