The Pokemon license

In addition to video games, manga, the animated series, and the card game, the Pokemon license is also trying to make a place for itself in the seventh art world. There have been many animated adaptations of the Pokemon license. But the only live-action film of the Pokemon brand, the only large-scale film adaptation, is Pokémon Detective Pikachu, released in 2019. Directed by Rob Letterman, the film received rather positive feedback. On the box office side, Detective Pikachu had grossed over $450 million. A score that was perhaps a bit shy (especially for a budget of $150 million) to push Warner to launch production of a sequel.

A hack that allowed fans to learn more about the upcoming Pokémon video games. For example, we know that the next game will feature new Pokémon like Gaia and Ikkaku. The hack also revealed that a new game, called Synapse, was also in development. But in addition to this news about the world of video games, this hack also gave us some news about the cinematic future of the saga.

Two new projects

Indeed, the Game Freak hack revealed that two other live-action films based on the Pokémon license are in development. There is, of course, a sequel to Detective Pikachu. Titled The Great Detective Pikachu, the film has been in development since 2021. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director of Kong: Skull Island is attached to the project. Unfortunately, it is unclear where the development of this new film stands. Initially, this The Great Detective Pikachu was supposed to be released in 2024, but the film has not even officially entered production.

A third film, not directly related to Detective Pikachu, is also mentioned in the Game Freak leak. Titled Game Boy, this feature film would like to delve deeply into the theme of Pokémon. The project would seek to highlight the unique bonds between trainers and Pokémon. At this stage, we also do not know where the progress of this project is… So, stay tuned!
