Pau Gasol.THE COUNTRY
Pau Gasol participated this Wednesday in Barça training with the rest of the team. This is the first time that he has joined the squad exercises led by Saras Jasikevicius, including those in which five-on-five matches are played. The center of Sant Boi, who on February 20 agreed to return to Barça, has not played an official competition match since March 10, 2019, with the Milwaukee Bucks. On May 9 of that year he underwent surgery for a scaphoid fracture in his left foot. He had to be operated on again and now he is beginning to see the end of the tunnel.
Pau, who at the age of 40 has been engaged for the remainder of the season with the club that he left in 2001 to triumph in the NBA, arrived in Barcelona on March 3 and five days later passed the medical examination. During the first days he performed individual exercises, but with little physical contact in the one against one or two against two. Depending on how his foot and his physique respond, and in agreement with Jasikevicius and the doctors, the date of his debut with the Barça shirt this season remains to be determined. Barça's next commitments are this Friday in the Euroleague at the Armani Milan field and on Sunday, at Valencia Basket, in an Endesa League match. The Barça team will then face three straight games at home, against Estudiantes on March 23, Alba Berlin, on March 26, and Fuenlabrada, on 28. Afterwards, they will be faced with three straight matches at home, on the Maccabi fields, on March 30. March, Fenerbahçe, April 2, and San Pablo Burgos, April 4.
Pau Gasol: “If he went back to Europe, it had to be Barça”
After undergoing surgery for the second time and a long process of recovery, highly conditioned by the pandemic, on November 24, 2020 he published for the first time some images of his return to activity on a field. His former teammate in the Spanish team Raúl López helped him on his return to training. Competing with Barça will open the door to his fifth participation in the Olympic Games, those in Tokyo, starting on July 23.
