Three people were killed when a passenger train from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed and collided with a garbage truck in a remote Missouri area.

In addition to the dead, there are injuries, but the Missouri Highway Patrol said their number is still unknown.

At least eight medical helicopters flew to the scene from across the state, Matt Dougherty, director of business development for Lifeflight Eagle, told the Kansas City Star newspaper.

According to Dougherty, the accident caused people have been injured, some in critical condition.

The Southwest Chief train was carrying 243 passengers and 12 crew, operator Amtrak said.
