“Our cities are fighting for freedom”: football players of the Ukrainian national team recorded an appeal about the war

13 players of the Ukrainian national team, whose hometowns suffered as a result of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, recorded a video address to the world before the start of the European Championship.

Video with the sportsmen's appeal was published by the Ukrainian Football Association.

In the video, 13 players of the Ukrainian national team, whose hometowns suffered from Russian aggression or were temporarily occupied, appealed to football fans from all over the world.

Football, like all sports, is not outside of politics, not outside of war. We call on all participating countries of the European Championship to help Ukraine. Our cities would like to accept the Euro, but they are fighting for freedom! – says the appeal.

Football players represent the following cities:

  • Krasnograd, Kharkiv Oblast – Andriy Lunin and Mykhailo Mudryk
  • Velika Novosilka, Donetsk Oblast – Mykola Shaparenko
  • Zaporizhia – Serhiy Sydorchuk
  • Makiivka, Donetsk region – Oleksandr Zubkov
  • Donetsk – Maksym Talovyerov and Anatoly Trubin
  • Saki, Crimea – Mykola Matvienko
  • Radomyshl, Zhytomyr region – Oleksandr Zinchenko
  • Zhytomyr – Ruslan Malinovsky
  • Cherkasy – Artem Dovbyk
  • Vinnytsia – Viktor Tsygankov
  • Kyiv – Ilya Zabarny

At the group stage of UE-2024 the blue and yellow team will play against the national team Romania (June 17), Slovakia (June 21) and Belgium (June 26). The matches will be held in Munich, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart, respectively.

The European Championship started on June 14, at 22:00 Kyiv time, with the match between Germany and Scotland. It will be served by a French brigade under the command of Clement Turpin.
