Operator Kyivstar assessed whether they would be able to provide 10 hours of network operation without electricity

The largest operator “Kyivstar” announced ambitious plans to strengthen the autonomy of its network. According to the statement of the company's president Oleksandr Komarov at the Global Outlook: Fostering unity conference, organized by the European Business Association, “Kyivstar” plans to significantly increase the autonomous operation time of its base stations by the second quarter of 2025.

Currently, the situation with the autonomy of the “Kyivstar” network looks like this: 65% of the base stations are able to work without external power supply for up to 4 hours, while the rest can function autonomously for 2 hours. However, the company sets itself the task of increasing the battery life to 6 hours for 30% of its network by the second quarter of 2025.

These plans are a response to the new requirements of the State Special Communications, according to which mobile operators must ensure availability of communication during a power outage for 10 hours, which significantly exceeds the previous norm of 4 hours. In addition, the regulator established a clear schedule, according to which by the end of January 2025, all 100% of operators' base stations must be equipped with autonomous backup power.

Komarov frankly admitted that achieving full compliance with the new requirements in the near term is a challenge for the company.

“I can't say that we are fulfilling them, we are moving in this direction. Maybe not 10 hours, but 6 hours,” he noted.
