Only patients with type 2 diabetes will now be able to be reimbursed for the drug Ozempic by the Ontario Drug Benefit. The province thus wants to tackle the problem of supplying the drug.

Ozempic is intended for diabetics, but it is often used to lose weight.

However, there is a shortage of the drug in Canada currently.

Doug Ford's government says it wants to ensure that people with diabetes have the treatment they need, hence the new instructions given to doctors regarding provincial coverage of the drug.

This measure is taken to conserve supply for those who need Ozempic the most, explains Hannah Jensen, spokesperson for the provincial health minister.
