One step closer to protecting the Great Bear Rainforest

On Thursday, conservation foundation Raincoast Conservancy said it had secured funding to protect wildlife in more than a quarter of the Great Bear Rainforest on coastal British Columbia.

After two years of mobilization and the raising of $1.92 million, the foundation will once again purchase commercial hunting rights, this time in an area of ​​18,239 km2 located in the south of the famous forest.

The organization thus aims to ban hunting for wild animal trophies and instead encourage ecotourism initiatives.

Since 2005, the foundation has carried out several hunting rights buybacks after the provincial moratorium on grizzly bear hunting, introduced in 2001, was lifted.

With six parcels of protected territory totaling more than 56,000 km2, the organization claims to be the largest forest tenure holder in the province.

Located on an archipelago on the central coast of British Columbia, the Great Bear Forest is one of the only remaining intact temperate rainforests in the world.

It extends over an area of ​​6.4 million hectares, almost the size of Ireland, and is home to ancient forests and rare species, such as the Kermode bear, a black bear with white fur found only in the region and nicknamed the spirit bear.
