A 58-year-old man has died and two other people are in critical condition in hospital following a fire that broke out in an apartment on Boulevard Saint-Jean-Baptiste, near the intersection from rue de la Gauchetière, in the Pointe-aux-Trembles district.

When they arrived at the scene of the tragedy, firefighters quickly put out the flames which had started in an apartment on the second floor of the building, owned by the Municipal Housing Office.

In the apartment, firefighters discovered three unconscious people, including one in a state of cardiorespiratory distress. The injured were taken to hospital in critical condition. One of them, a 58-year-old man, was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to Francis Fleury, head of the fire prevention section at the City of Montreal, the firefighters were able to contain the flames in the affected apartment by quickly controlling the blaze which, however, generated a lot of smoke.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, an investigation has been opened.

Many tenants of the building had to be evacuated. It is unknown when they will be able to return to their accommodation.

The Montreal Fire Department reiterates the importance of having a functional smoke detector and changing the batteries regularly.< /p>
