The trend in German households is moving more and more towards streaming instead of linear television programming. Broadcasters such as ARD, ZDF and WDR, but also the private broadcasters RTL, ProSieben and Co. suffer from this. Streaming services like Netflix are primarily aimed at younger audiences who watch their favorite series through apps.
This is also offered by ARD, which actively advertises itself on television by offering films and co. Earlier in the media library. But the “Das Erste” app is now being sent to the eternal hunting grounds. It has not been in the Play Store or App Store since the end of January. In the end, the app “thought” it was a browser and thus made one or the other smile.
One ARD app for everything
The reason for discontinuing the Das Erste app is simple, as ARD explains: You want to offer content in a central location and make it easier for users to use. In future, only the media library will be available as an app for Android and iOS.
In the media library, however, you can see not only the already wide range of ARD’s offers, but also other channels belonging to the first. The se include phoenix, ARD One, tagesschau24, ARD alpha and ARD Kosmos. The third-party regional programs are also processed in the app.
More overview and user-friendliness
In addition to the central video offering, the public television broadcasters have also fundamentally optimized the handling of the ARD app. From now on, users should be able to use the media library intuitively and find curated series, films and the like. In addition, information on individual programs should be easier to find because the search in the channels now works across platforms, for example.
Program highlights now have a prominent place in the app and the web version of the ARD media library. For fans, for example from “Tatort”, ARD provides additional material, insights behind the scenes and more.
The ARD and ZDF media libraries have been using a joint log-in since the end of March 2020. That means: If you have access to the ARD media library but not to ZDF, you can also log into the ZDF media library with the ARD access data. Because the web versions of the two media libraries carry selected content from the other station and link to it.
