North Korea is developing the world's largest warship

North Korea is likely building its largest warship. Satellite images from a shipyard in the city of Nampo indicate the construction of a new 170-meter-long slipway. This large-scale project may indicate the regime's plans to create a ship much larger than the Amnok-class corvettes, which are currently the largest combat units of the DPRK Navy, reports Army INFORM.

Construction began in May 2024. The images show the first sections of the ship's hull, as well as the gantry cranes used for assembly. However, a camouflage net is stretched over the slipway, which complicates a more detailed analysis.

Analysts suggest two options: either it will be a powerful missile frigate or a new ballistic missile submarine. At the same time, there is a possibility that the terrorist state of the Russian Federation is involved in the project, given North Korea's limited technological capabilities.

In September 2024, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced plans to strengthen the fleet with new large ships. Previously, Amnok-class corvettes have already been used to launch cruise missiles, and the new platform could significantly increase the fleet's combat capabilities.

Experts emphasize that although the North Korean fleet is large in terms of the number of ships, most of them have limited combat effectiveness. The new ship could be an important step in realizing Pyongyang's ambitions in the region.
