Nokia is developing a portable 5G system for military needs that does not require base stations.
Finnish telecommunications corporation Nokia has begun developing special mobile devices that will allow the military to deploy a 5G network in the field without the use of cell towers. This is reported by Bloomberg.
To implement the project to provide the military with wireless communications, Nokia has acquired the American company Fenix Group from Virginia, which specializes in the production of military radio stations. Currently, the telecommunications corporation is working on integrating these radio stations into its 5G platforms.
According to Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark, the company is developing a fully flexible, self-configuring network that can be carried in military backpacks or installed on vehicles. The technology is being configured to provide reliable communications in the field and the ability to move with military units.
Lundmark also noted that the technology under development could find applications in the field of public safety, in particular for the needs of police and fire departments.
