No Wi-Fi at night: 5 reasons to turn off your router while you sleep

Various gadgets with the ability to access the Internet have long become an integral part of our lives. Internet surfing, chatting in messengers, viewing entertainment content on Tik-Tok and Instagram have become part of our daily routine. Even at night, we stay online, although this is extremely harmful to both physical and mental health. Experts advise turning off your Wi-Fi router at night. There are 5 serious reasons for this and they are not only related to health.

Reason 1: Reducing the impact of electromagnetic fields

According to research, electromagnetic fields emitted by smartphones and Wi-Fi routers can seriously harm human health. The WHO qualifies such an effect as carcinogenic. It is not yet known what diseases people who are exposed to radiation from routers and other devices connected to the Internet every day may develop. However, doctors advise limiting the effects of such radiation at least at night.

Reason 2: Improving sleep quality

If your phone is connected to the Internet all night, it may receive notifications and messages. Even if the smartphone is in vibrate mode, these sounds subconsciously cause anxiety. Therefore, it is better to either turn off your phone at night or turn on the «Do not disturb» mode.

Reason 3: Privacy protection

Leaving Wi-Fi on all night makes you a potential target for cybercriminals. They can exploit weaknesses in your network or access personal information through applications running in the background.

Reason 4: Battery saving

The operation of some applications in the background, including their updates and data transfer, can quickly drain your smartphone's battery. We fell asleep with 80% charge, and in the morning the phone «sown» to 40%.

Reason 5: Saving electricity

Every hour, a Wi-Fi router consumes from 5 to 20 watts. So by turning it off while you sleep, you can save from 40 to 160 watts every night. Over the course of a month or year, this habit will have a significant impact on your electricity bill.
