“New world record”: huge WSE-3 chip beats leading Frontier supercomputer

Thanks to the WSE-3 chip scientists can complete a simulation in one day that would take two years on a GPU-based supercomputer.

Cerebras Systems said that one of its Wafer Scale Engine (WSE) chips achieved a record performance, performing more than 1.1 million steps per second, which is 748 times faster than what is possible on the world's leading supercomputer Frontier. This is stated on the company's official website.

According to the company's statement, Cerebras also surpassed Anton 3 – the world's leading specialized supercomputer for molecular dynamics. Anton 3 uses 512 specialized processors and 400 kilowatts of power. In contrast, Cerebras uses a single accelerator, 7% of the power and outperforms Anton 3 by 20%.

The company noted that existing supercomputers have been limited to modeling materials at the atomic level for a few microseconds. The breakthrough by Cerebras and scientists from US national laboratories gives researchers a new scientific tool to study vital materials on the millisecond time scale.

Simulation on long time scales is reportedly enabling scientists to explore previously inaccessible phenomena across a wide range of industries. For example, materials scientists can study the long-term behavior of complex materials, pharmaceutical researchers can model protein folding and drug interactions, and renewable energy experts can design more efficient energy storage systems.

Based on data  Forbes, Cerebras set said record with the CS-3 system, which runs on the world's largest and fastest commercially available AI processor Wafer-Scale Engine-3 (WSE-3). As a result, scientists can now achieve in one day what took two years of simulation on a GPU-based supercomputer.
