New US project: super-powerful lasers will make it possible to generate energy “forever”

A new US project: super-powerful lasers will make it possible to generate energy

The main topic of research will be laser thermonuclear fusion. If successful, laser fusion power promises to safely generate virtually unlimited, sustainable, carbon-free energy.

In the US, construction will soon begin on a new research facility located on the Foothills campus of Colorado State University. This is discussed on the official website of the educational institution.

The building will reportedly be called the Advanced Technology Lasers for Applications and Science (ATLAS) Facility. Once construction is complete, the facility will house an upgraded version of the existing high-power laser developed at CSU, combined with two new lasers provided by Marvel Fusion.

The focus of research at the ATLAS Facility will be laser fusion. If successful, laser fusion technology promises to safely generate virtually unlimited, sustainable, carbon-free energy.

The new complex will be located next to existing buildings focused on laser research. The facility will be put into operation in mid-2026 and will be the result of 40 years of research in the field of laser development.

In addition to research in the field of fusion and basic science, the ATLAS Facility will work in fields such as medicine, where lasers can be used to deliver energy to a localized area to treat tumors. Other potential research at the facility includes microchip lithography and design, as well as detailed X-ray imaging of fast-moving objects such as aircraft engine turbines in full motion.

“We have been a leader in laser research. for decades, and our faculty has been advancing critical technologies. This new facility will house one of the most powerful lasers in the world and make CSU a nexus for laser fusion research,” — Colorado State University Chancellor Amy Parson said.
