The scientific study that is planned for publication in “Nature Communication” has not yet been peer-reviewed. “This is a study that we carried out in collaboration with a large company. 1655 employees, half of them working from home, the other half with customer contact, were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies from spring 2020. That was repeated after three or six months, “said Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt, head of the Institute for Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine at MedUni Vienna, to the APA.
A total of 10.15 percent of the subjects (168 subjects; 16 to 65 years old) had positive immunoglobulin G (IgG) and / or immunoglobulin A (IgA) results in the tests. This is an indication of contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, although the mere detection of IgA antibodies is not a clear sign of an infection. As early as the summer of 2020, the experts had shown as one of the first results that a protective immune response is built up, especially after a symptom of Covid 19 disease. Furthermore, antibodies against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein are apparently crucial for protection, since these are associated with the neutralizing antibodies.
8.33 percent of the subjects with spike protein (S1) -positive tests had RBD-specific antibodies, 6.55 percent only antibodies against a protein of the virus capsid (NCP) inside the pathogen.
The latter decreased after just three months. “Only the antibodies against the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein remained stable for six months. This suggests that people after a SARS-CoV-2 infection with such antibodies have built up effective protection against further infection”, said Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt.
But it is obviously important that the infection progresses with symptoms, i.e. a noticeable Covid 19 disease occurs. “All test subjects with virus-neutralizing antibodies also reported symptoms.
The temporary loss of smell and / or taste correlated best with the presence of immunological protection from SARS-CoV-2-neutralizing antibodies,” explained the expert.
