New device will provide 22 million homes with marine renewable energy: what it is

Toolkit helps researchers evaluate the performance of their renewable energy technologies using real-world data.

Research Tool Marine and The Hydrokinetic Toolkit (MHKiT), created by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) in the US, will help researchers provide 22 million homes with clean and renewable energy from the sea. About this writes interestingengineering.com.

Marine renewable energy is a potential source of clean energy available in most parts of the world. Unlike wind and solar energy, it is available around the clock. To exploit the real potential of marine energy, researchers need to be able to model their technologies using real data about ocean waves and currents. MHKiT provides data validation and standardized analysis tools to help researchers obtain more realistic power generation data from their technologies. It has worked in conjunction with technologies such as underwater turbines to harness the temperature gradient of ocean currents to generate electricity.

MHKiT is available on the MATLAB and Python programming platforms, each used by a specific group of researchers. Recent updates to the MATLAB toolkit include turbulence and river flow visualization, as well as the ability to simulate extreme sea states.

The Python update supports multidimensional data from agencies such as the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of research (NOAA). In addition, the update enables better identification and analysis of significant wave events and calculation of wave heights. More importantly, updates come from project authors who contribute features to the suite. MHKiT — it is a powerful tool with standardized, validated code, software and data that allows you to control the quality of the analysis.
